music, favourites, blog, lany, raye, amber run, matt wills

SO far, 2017 has been rather good when it comes to new music. We've had Katy Perry's comeback with Chained To The Rhythm and Ed Sheeran's Divide album which dropped today! It's all been good thus far. My February Favourites playlist isn't exactly full of new releases. Some I discovered and others I went back to. Here are my Top 5, in no particular order!

5. I Found - AMBER RUN

Despite this song being released 2 years ago, I found myself listening to it a lot. I got the chance to watch the band at their London gig towards the end of the month. Amber Run are such a fantastic live band. The songs are fuller and they perform from a special place. This song a is a beautiful and moving ballad. A love song with a cinematic feel, that will surely have you imagining a whole scene in your mind.

2017 is the year I discovered LANY and I am so grateful for the opportunity. Despite having their music playing a lot, this is one of my recent favourites. The 80s 'feel' with atmospheric synth gives the band a different sound. The American band have toured with the likes of X Ambassadors, Ellie Goulding and Troye Sivan. This song is lyrically straightforward, and all about wondering if the friends surrounding are indeed true friends, especially in the current climate of busy lives. It depicts loneliness from an interesting perspective. Incredibly relatable.

3. Liar - LÉON

This song showed up on one of my Discover Weekly playlists. It immediately caught my attention and is now one of my favourite tunes. The Swedish singer started getting recognition after her 2015 Treasure EP. Liar is probably her best song to date. Her voice has unique timbre to it and the chorus of this particular song is simple and shows of her breathy tone. The confidence in this song maks me feel better on a rainy day.

2. Always - MATT WILLS

Much like the previous song, this track also popped up on my Discover Weekly playlist. Unlike LÉON, whose music I was already acquainted with, Matt Wills was a complete discovery. He's currently touring Europe supporting Bastille. The song is Wills' 2016 EP Set You Free. It's a really easy listening acoustic pop song. The pre-chorus and chorus are what really grabbed my attention. His vocals give off an Ed Sheeran vibe. I predict big things for this guy!

1. Shhh - RAYE

This is without a doubt my favourite song my the 19-year-old singer. I also had the opportunity to attend her gig last month at XOYO. She was absolutely exceptional. Vocals on point and a completely energetic performance. This is the song she started her set with. In my opinion, it was the perfect choice. It's different. It's a fast-paced song, builds up with beats and changes chords accordingly, creating a climactic atmosphere. The chorus is the opposite of the verses. It's an incredible song. I cannot wait to see what 2017 has in store for Raye, who recently came in 2nd Runner Up in BBC Sound of 2017.

That's it for February Favourites. Other close contenders were Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2 by Stormzy (ft MNEK) and Ed Sheeran's How Would You Feel (Paen). All 16 songs on the playlist are worth listening to, so make sure you check it out!

Until next month.
